I was so looking forward to this movie. I wanted to love it so bad. It's Jason Statham and a giant shark! Also the trailers made the film look really self-aware and funny, suggesting all the ingredients for a great ludicrous b-movie in the vein of the fast and the furious. I love the fast and the furious because those films know exactly what they are and how to play up the ridiculous elements that make them so enjoyable in a dumb entertainment way.
But sadly, this film is just middle of the road. (Middle of the ocean. It's not knowingly self-aware enough to be enjoyable or obliviously terrible enough to be a great ironic guilty pleasure experience (like say Deep Blue Sea or Geostorm. The Meg has no idea what it wants to be. It's fluctuates between broad comedy verging on parody, and serious emotional disaster film throughout the runtime and it doesn't do either of these things well. It's not funny when it tries to be funny, and it's not emotionally affecting when it tries to be serious.
All of the characters are as cliche as they come and for the most part portrayed by terrible actors. The only character you'll like is Jason Statham's, and that's only because of Statham himself, not anything to do with the character or the writing.
But despite all this, I did have *some* fun with The Meg. The visuals are spectacular in the underwater sequences and the shark does look great. I also found the final confrontation between Statham and the Meg to be pretty entertaining. But these things are just a few minutes out of a otherwise very dull boring film.
With films, like fast and the furious or deep blue sea, there is a consistent tone and style throughout the film, and that's what makes those films so enjoyable to watch. It's not enough just to have a couple crazy moments.
But as I said, there is a moderate amount of fun to be had in The Meg. If you enjoy this sort of dumb action/disaster movie, I recommend finding a cheap Tuesday showtime somewhere or a matinee. Don't see this film for 15, you will be disappointed.
